I have an easier time with profiles than I do with portraits. Oh I can do them, it's just harder. Being lazy, I selected a profile of my niece Wendy. Since the original picture had a light background, I selected a cream colored pastel paper.
I learned a few things with this drawing. I learned that pastels can be blended to form different colors and produce effects like skin tone textures. I also discovered that if I mess up, I can actually scrap off some of the color from the paper and re-apply a different color to "fix" it.
I still haven't managed to figure out darker skin areas but I suspect it was due to a lack of the correct colors. Someday I'll invest in a nice set larger than 36 basic colors.
So what do I like the most? The blended hair colors. What don't I like? That you can still see the underlying pencil sketch and her hands.
Still, I'm pretty happy with pastel drawing #2. Wait until drawing #20 and watch me wig out about every minor imperfection!
